Markets have a habit of treating new technologies as reset points - moments when the old rules no longer apply. Artificial intelligence is being framed in much the same way.
Faster execution, lower costs and the automation of complex tasks have led many to assume that entire industries are on the brink of structural change.
History tends to be less binary.
Even in the fastest-moving areas of technology, the underlying principles don’t disappear. If anything, they become more visible.
Before focusing on what AI is changing, it helps to be clear on what it isn’t.
Every market rests on a set of enduring foundations: trust, accountability, data ownership, distribution and regulation. These aren’t features that can be switched on or off. They shape how capital moves and where risk ultimately sits.
Technology can change how services are delivered, but it rarely changes who is accountable when something goes wrong. In sectors where outcomes carry financial, legal or reputational consequences, that distinction matters.
What AI has done is expand what’s possible. Tasks that once took hours, from financial modelling to document review, can now be completed in minutes. Tools across financial analysis, legal workflows and cybersecurity are pushing that shift further, forcing a reassessment of where automation genuinely adds value.
In lower-stakes areas, the benefits are already clear. Efficiency is improving and, in some cases, roles are being displaced.
But the impact isn’t uniform. In practice, AI tends to expose constraints rather than remove them. Where precision is critical and accountability cannot be outsourced, adoption slows. “Almost right” is not good enough in a courtroom, on a balance sheet or in a regulatory filing.
Execution can be automated. Responsibility still sits somewhere.
This becomes most obvious in financial services, legal advisory and cybersecurity - sectors where trust is embedded into the product itself.
Outputs need to be verifiable. Decisions need to be explainable. And accountability has to sit with a clearly defined party. AI can support these processes, but it does not replace the judgment required to handle uncertainty or the responsibility tied to high-stakes decisions.
Adoption, therefore, is not just about capability. It depends on whether these tools can operate within the standards expected by regulators, clients and the market.
It’s easy to describe trust as something intangible, but in practice it behaves more like infrastructure.
It is built over time, through data, systems, client relationships and regulatory alignment. It is reinforced through consistency and tested under pressure, and it cannot be recreated quickly.
That is why many incumbent platforms remain resilient. New tools can be added to existing workflows, but they don’t replace the systems of record or the credibility behind them.
In that sense, trust isn’t part of the system. It is the system.
These dynamics are particularly relevant in a market like Hong Kong. As a global financial hub, it sits at the intersection of capital flows, regulation and cross-border activity. Trust isn’t just an advantage; it’s a condition of participation.
AI adoption in this context is unlikely to mirror less regulated sectors. Speed alone isn’t enough. Accuracy, transparency and accountability carry more weight, especially when dealing with institutional clients across multiple jurisdictions.
If anything, advances in AI increase the importance of these foundations rather than diminish them.
For investors, the key point is that AI is not a uniform force of disruption. Its impact varies depending on where a business sits in the value chain.
The more useful questions are structural:
· Who owns the data?
· Who controls the client relationship?
· Who carries the liability when something goes wrong?
These are the factors that determine not just who adopts AI, but who ultimately captures the value.
AI will continue to evolve quickly and its influence will deepen. But the idea that it overrides the basic mechanics of markets doesn’t hold up.
Technology expands what can be done and accelerates how it’s done. It doesn’t remove the need for trust, accountability or control.
In the end, innovation creates the opportunity. The fundamentals still decide who benefits from it.
